What's Your Story?

I had a contact via FB from a maker of alt ukes, and invited him to share his story. I invite others, too, right here--also players who have an alt uke tale to tell.

Dave Builds Ukuleles

My interest in alternative ukuleles was sparked soon after I started making them. From the first I had no interest in making ukes that were just like the rest of them. I admire the craftsmanship and musical qualities of the best traditional ukes that look just like miniature guitars, but as a maker I want something more in the way of freedom in design. This is the excitement of building for me. And it has been the same for some others, too, as I have found looking into the history of the worldwide ukulele movement and some of the interesting and beautiful non-traditional instruments that have come along with it. As far as the making goes, I am a one-man operation and I build all my ukuleles from reclaimed lumber. hardwoods from my local area, Mid-Michigan--so my materials are just as innovative as the forms I make.
